The word 'juggernaut' may now refer to a colossal
truck, usually jocularly, but the word has an interesting origin. The word derives from 'Jagganatha', a name of the Hindi god Vishnu. This deity's image used to be placed in a cart forty-five feet high with sixteen wheels nearly seven feet across. As this huge structure rolled past the by-standing faithful, some devotees would fling themselves beneath its wheels believing that such a death would ensure them eternal bliss. |
