Jerrycan
The word ‘jerrycan’ is a compound of ‘jerry’ and ‘can’.
German military were the first to use small metal containers for lugging around petrol and other fuels.
The Allies soon adopted the idea and named the contraption after the inventors: the Germans.
‘Jerry’ being the abusive name for Germans, they called it a ‘jerrycan’.
In the course of time, the term lost its original connotations.
Now, even the Germans themselves – usually unwittingly – use the word.
So, yes, time is a great healer.
But for what purpose did all these sons, fathers, husbands, daughters, mothers, wives, lose their lives?
