HONEYMOON

I have read quite extensively about the
etymology of this lovely English word, 'honeymoon'. There are very, very many different stories told about the origin and about the implicit semiotic characteristics of this word. All in all, I believe - for what specific linguistic reasons I would not like to admit to - the most credible explanation is the following. The word 'honeymoon' is supposed to derive from the ancient Greek world. It is believed to be a fact that it was customary for the family of the bride to supply the newly-wedded bridegroom with a month's (a moon's cycle) of the wine that was habitually offered at weddings, honey wine. In other places I have found that many people ascribe significant energizing and aphrodisiacal qualities to honey in general, so that the explanation at issue would not sound too absurd an idea, in view of the antique obsession with family procreation. And, all in all, who cares? Aren't wine and love both intoxicating?
